PaperPilot: Pure-Rust PDF Toolkit with Local Processing
PaperPilot is a Rust-based document toolkit that processes PDFs locally without cloud dependencies.
PaperPilot is a PDF and document toolkit written in Rust that operates without Chromium, C++ runtimes, or cloud calls. The engine ensures files never leave the user's machine, a feature users can verify by monitoring their browser's Network tab. The tool supports organizing documents through merging, splitting, rotating, and reordering pages. It also handles optimization via compression and text extraction using pure-Rust PaddleOCR. Security features include watermarking, signature validation, PII scanning, and deep sanitization. Additionally, the toolkit converts Excel files to JSON and CSV formats.
The Community Edition is licensed under Apache 2.0 and includes a CLI, MCP server, REST gateway, WASM engine, and desktop app. Users can integrate PaperPilot with Claude Desktop by downloading the MCP server and updating their configuration file. The CLI provides commands for specific tasks, such as merging PDFs, compressing files with quality settings, and rotating specific pages. An Enterprise Edition with SSO, RBAC, audit logs, and DLP is currently in development.
Future versions are planned to expand functionality. Version 0.7 will support PDF conversion to Markdown, HTML, and JSON. Version 0.8 aims to add conversion to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Version 0.9 will introduce encryption, decryption, signing, redaction, forms, and annotations. Version 1.0 is scheduled to include rendering, flattening, repairing, comparing, PDF/A compliance, and Bates numbering.
