OpenAI introduces device and card limits for ChatGPT paid plans
OpenAI is restricting the number of paid ChatGPT accounts per device and payment card to curb multi-account usage.
OpenAI is implementing new security measures that limit the number of paid ChatGPT accounts linked to a single device or payment card. Users who exceed these thresholds will be blocked from starting new subscriptions. When a device reaches its cap, users see a “Device limit reached” message, and the account can no longer be used on that device. Logging out does not free up a paid account spot on the device.
The limits apply to ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 plans. Free accounts and Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans are exempt. The policy is expected to affect users who switch between multiple paid accounts on one device to maximize flat-rate subscription usage. OpenAI suggests buying extra credits or usage resets instead of adding new subscriptions, noting these are generally more expensive options.
OpenAI’s move to merge Chat and Work suggests a prioritization of revenue over growth.
