OpenAI has confirmed plans to merge Chat and Work features within ChatGPT, a move previously announced by the company. The integration will fold Work's agentic capabilities directly into the standard chat interface. This change allows users to transition from simple conversations to complex tasks without switching modes. Users can utilize files and plugins to request the creation of websites or presentations within a single environment. OpenAI stated that this combined experience enables ChatGPT to carry an idea through in one place.

The merger will also unify usage allowances. OpenAI Plus, Pro, and Business plans will share a single token budget across ChatGPT and Codex. While Codex remains a separate experience in the desktop app, it will draw from the same shared allowance as ChatGPT. Chats using Instant models are excluded from this shared limit, with unlimited Instant access included in subscriptions. In preparation for this change, OpenAI doubled usage limits for higher-priced plans, including Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500, effective October 29.

OpenAI will begin testing the combined experience with a small group of users in the coming weeks. The company plans to expand access to more people following the initial test period.
