DoorDash reports minimal AI agent order volume
DoorDash disclosed that third-party AI agents generated only several hundred orders during its third quarter.
DoorDash reported receiving only several hundred orders from third-party AI agents during its third-quarter earnings call. CEO Tony Xu described AI agent usage as a very dynamic area but noted it currently represents a small fraction of total orders. The company completed an average of 3 million deliveries daily according to its 2025 report. Xu stated that users are still predominantly placing orders through the DoorDash app rather than via AI agents. The company handled just shy of 1 billion orders total in the third quarter of 2026.
DoorDash has introduced several AI tools, including a text-to-order agent in September, a CLI agent in July, and a chatbot called Ask DoorDash in June. The company also released an MCP connector less than a month ago to enable ordering from other chatbots for corporate ordering. This connector is mainly used to streamline corporate lunch orders and is available to a small number of early beta partners. Xu sees potential for AI agents to be helpful for long consideration purchases and major decisions, while noting that simple tasks like ordering food tend to come directly to DoorDash.
The company plans to develop a healthy relationship with third-party agent makers and may advertise within these agents in the future. Meanwhile, Amazon has been blocking personal AI agents from accessing its website content, while Walmart has laid out a red carpet for AI agents to snag business from competitors.
