AlpineBSD has been announced as a new operating system within the BSD family. The project is based on the NetBSD kernel and features a userspace inspired by Alpine Linux. A defining characteristic of the system is its AI policy, which aims to avoid the output of generative AI models. Under this policy, software containing output from tools like large language models is considered tainted. The project is hosted on Sourcehut under the account of sircmpwn, who is better known as Drew DeVault.

The operating system ships with the NetBSD kernel, libc, and essential platform-specific tools such as mount. It includes the apk-tools package manager and busybox. While the package collection is original, AlpineBSD is not a fork of Alpine Linux. The system prefers a slightly more GNU-oriented userspace, utilizing GNU make over BSD make. Currently, the project uses the s6 init system, with plans to add OpenRC as an alternative.

AlpineBSD is described as a work in progress. There are currently no installation media or installer available. However, it is possible to manually bootstrap an installation for adventurous users who follow a high-level guide. The NetBSD kernel used in the system has spotty hardware support compared to Linux, meaning users cannot necessarily expect it to work on any random computer.
