SEC Adds Tokenization to 2027 Exam Priorities
The SEC has included tokenization in its fiscal 2027 examination priorities, identifying it as a high-risk area for market infrastructure.
The Securities and Exchange Commission published its fiscal 2027 examination priorities on Thursday. The document explicitly names tokenization as an area of focus for examinations of critical market infrastructure. It is listed among high-risk areas to be examined at clearing agencies. The priorities cover the Division of Examinations' more than 34,000 registrants, including investment advisers, investment companies, broker-dealers, clearing agencies, and transfer agents.
Tokenization appears under evolving market infrastructure risks alongside Treasury clearing reforms. It is examined alongside quantum computing and extended trading hours as emerging trends. The broader technology section groups AI under a category called 'emerging technologies,' while also naming 'super intelligence and other advanced technologies' as an area of heightened scrutiny. Tokenization received its own bullet point regarding risks associated with evolving market infrastructure.
This inclusion marks a shift from the previous year. The FY2026 exam priorities, released in November 2025, dropped crypto as a standalone focus area for the first time since 2021. Tokenization was not explicitly mentioned in the 2026 priorities. Director Keith Cassidy stated that the approach enables the SEC to adapt to changing market conditions and identify developing risk patterns.
Recent market activity includes a joint venture between OKX and Intercontinental Exchange. The pair filed to launch a platform offering tokenized shares in more than 60 US-listed companies earlier this month. The SEC’s examination program will now assess these developments as part of its broader oversight of market infrastructure.
