Michael Malis has been sharing recent software developments with the author since early this year. He stated that developers should be more ambitious with the software they build. The author trusts Malis's work without independent verification due to their established relationship.

Testing the pgrust project uncovered a numerical bug in Postgres that can cause valid SP-GiST operations to fail. The testing also identified a format cache bug that can cause incorrect results from JSONPath. Additionally, a pgcrypto bug was found that can cause later operations to fail. Multiple memory safety bugs in the dictionary loader and a money overflow bug were also uncovered during this process.

The main pitch for pgrust is performance. The author built a regex engine that can be tweaked to be faster than other general-purpose regex libraries on specific workloads. A ripgrep fork using the native code compiler from this engine was also built, which is faster for specific codex ripgrep workloads. A Rust project was created to speed up builds for the author's projects. Switching development from Mac to Linux improved syscall and filesystem overhead significantly.

OpenAI was going to use Cerebras for their SOTA models instead of fast-but-low-quality models like 5.3-Codex-Spark. It took the author about 5 hours to get something superhuman with GPT-5.1/5.2. It took the author about 20 hours to become what appeared to be the strongest AI at the time. Gabriel Cangussu recently built an AI that demolishes the author's AI. GPT-6 Astra succeeds at passing all registered tests for zstd more than 99% of the time across all conditions. Implementing zstd with GPT-6 Astra took about $1.
