NASA panel flags lunar fueling risks and LEO access concerns
A NASA safety panel identified fueling requirements as a major risk for the Artemis IV mission while raising concerns about future low Earth orbit access.
Charlie Precourt stated that the number of required fuelings for the Artemis IV lander is a significant risk factor reducing the likelihood of mission success. NASA is still working toward a human lunar landing in 2028.
Elon Musk disputed the reported suggestion that approximately 22 launches might be needed to support a Starship landing on the Moon. Precourt praised NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman and his team for trying to find ways to help SpaceX and Blue Origin be successful in their development of landers.
The NASA Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel raised concerns about future access to low Earth orbit due to SpaceX's plans to phase out Falcon rockets and Dragon spacecraft. These concerns address the broader implications of current fleet transitions. The panel also noted that the Boeing Starliner has a possible uncrewed launch date mooted around December 2026, with the earliest possible launch in mid-January 2027.
