Google updates privacy policy to allow Gmail data for targeted ads
Google revised its privacy policy to permit the use of Gmail and Google Photos data for targeted advertising when users opt into Personal Intelligence features.
Google updated its privacy policy on October 16, 2026, to allow data from Gmail, Drive, and Google Photos to be used for targeted ads. This change applies specifically to users who opt into Personal Intelligence features. The update adds an exception to Google's previous promise not to use content from these services for personalized advertising.
Personal Intelligence, released in early 2026, allows users to connect their Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos data to AI Mode and other Search tools. When connected, this data may contribute to ad personalization. Google states that advertisers do not receive access to personal data or identifying details such as names or email addresses. The company also confirms that ads will not be based on sensitive categories including race, sexual orientation, religion, or health.
The feature is currently rolling out as a beta to eligible users over the age of 18 globally, excluding specific regions. Google clarifies that ads will not be based directly on Gmail inbox or Photos library content. The previous version of the privacy policy explicitly stated that personalized ads would not be shown based on content from Drive, Gmail, or Photos.
Users can prevent their personal data from being used for targeted ads by disconnecting apps from Search's Personal Intelligence features. They can also disable Personalized Recommendations via Search Services Personalization settings. These options are available in the Google Account's Data & privacy settings under Connected Content apps.
