Google Introduces StreamVibe Video Agent for Contextual Assistance

A research team led by Google introduced StreamVibe, a video agent designed to decide when to speak up. Researchers from Google, Stanford, Oxford, and several U.S. universities are developing an assistant that watches users perform tasks like cooking or assembling furniture. The system is designed to understand vague requests such as 'Please help me if I run into any difficulties.' Existing video assistants struggle with unspoken intentions and often repeat advice or respond too late.
The research team compiled a benchmark of about 4,100 examples from more than 183 hours of everyday life and software recordings. Gemini 2.5 Flash was used to suggest when to offer help and what to say during the benchmark testing. The benchmark test covers three stages: clear instructions, vague goals, and requests that change over time. StreamVibe-VL is a model based on Alibaba's Qwen3.5-9B that decides every second whether to stay quiet or speak. A second training stage uses reinforcement learning to make the StreamVibe-VL model more reserved so it does not constantly interrupt.
StreamVibe-VL improves response timing and quality by 10.7 percent over other models. The memory system in StreamVibe is designed to boost proactive interaction by another 12.3 percent. Google's proprietary Gemini 3.8 Flash scores higher than StreamVibe-VL in several tests. Performance across all tested systems drops significantly when models process an entire video and build on their own earlier responses. A key content metric for the responses drops by up to 61.5 percent based on the system's own history in continuous operation. In videos longer than five minutes, models rarely pick the right moment and find it hard to track changed instructions.
