GitHub scales infrastructure and launches Copilot Fusion
GitHub announced infrastructure upgrades and new AI features following a year of high commit volumes and service outages.
GitHub recorded 7.4 billion code commits in September 2026, a volume five times higher than the previous year. This surge in AI-driven activity caused service outages starting last December, with 90-day availability dropping to approximately 84 percent on May 7. Executives apologized for the disruptions and committed to infrastructure improvements. The company added 160 petabytes of high-speed storage and 50 Tb/s of network capacity this year. GitHub is redesigning its technical architecture to separate compute and storage, expecting to complete a migration to a multi-region Azure deployment early next year.
At Universe, GitHub announced the general availability of Copilot Fusion, previously previewed as HydraFusion. Copilot Fusion Max scored within two points of Opus 5.5 Max in the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index while operating at half the cost and 40% less time per task. GitHub is extending Copilot access to all Enterprise users without additional per-seat purchases, though customers remain billed for token usage. Jay Parikh, EVP of CoreAI at Microsoft, was present for the announcements.
The platform also introduced AI Scans to check pull requests for vulnerabilities in languages not addressed by rule-based scanning. A new package firewall checks enterprise policy settings before fetching npm packages.
