Arc browser shuts down as users seek alternatives
The Browser Company is ending support for Arc, prompting users to evaluate new browsers like Dia, Zen, and Orion.
The Browser Company is discontinuing the Arc browser by Christmas. The company shifted its focus to the AI-centric Dia two years ago, leaving Arc in maintenance mode. Users will no longer be able to use the Arc app after the holiday period.
Dia has recently acquired many of Arc's best features. Other options include Zen, which runs on Mozilla's Gecko engine rather than Chromium. Zen was previously considered buggy but has reportedly improved. Orion, made by Kagi, offers seamless integration with their service. Helium is a super minimalist, no-frills browser. Firefox forks like Waterfox and Floorp offer more customization options. Brave was found to be too heavy and push proprietary features. Quiche is a favorite on iOS, while Arc was never great on Android.
Default browsers like Chrome, Safari, and Edge fail users in one way or another. The author previously used Vivaldi but found it too fiddly. The author likes Firefox's recent design but finds its stance on AI confusing. The author plans to report back periodically on their journey to find a new browser.
