Apple Unveils First Touchscreen MacBook Pro with OLED Display
Apple announced its first MacBook Pro with a touchscreen interface, featuring a tandem OLED panel and M5 chips.
Apple announced its first MacBook Pro with a touchscreen interface at its 'Pro and tell' event on Wednesday. The new device features a PROLED XDR touch display, which is a tandem OLED panel offering up to 2,000 nits of brightness and a 120Hz refresh rate. The display also includes a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio. The 14-inch model starts at $2,899, while the 16-inch version begins at $3,399. The 14-inch Pro weighs 3.0 pounds, and the 16-inch Pro weighs 4.0 pounds.
The hardware design includes a hole punch for the webcam rather than a notch, described as a Dynamic Island-style cutout. Both models feature three Thunderbolt 5 ports, an HDMI port, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe, and a headphone jack. The system includes M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, with configurations offering up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage. A six-speaker array with a new woofer design provides audio output.
Apple designed a hinge that stabilizes the screen when users touch it to prevent camera shake during video calls. The 12MP Center Stage camera includes advanced video stabilization to prevent shaking when the user touches the screen. Apple's first-party apps are optimized for touch, and the system automatically translates touches into clicks. Third-party applications, including Notion, Canva, Zoom, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Lightroom, and DaVinci Resolve, will take advantage of the new touch controls.
